Safety Tips for a Safe Halloween
In the spirit of fostering a safe and fun Halloween evening the Chula Vista Police Department offers the following safety tips for families and residents:
When trick-or-treating, young children should always be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. Teens should stay in a group and avoid unfamiliar neighborhoods. Remind teenagers to stay on well-lit streets, use the sidewalks, obey traffic and pedestrian regulations, and cross the street at designated crosswalks. Any groups trick-or-treating should take along a flashlight.
Parents are encouraged to discuss appropriate behavior for youth, like not cutting across private yards and staying on safe paths that are well traveled. Remind children to never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat, and never accept unwrapped food or open beverages. When crossing streets it’s important to remove any mask or item that could obstruct their vision. Children should walk (not run) across the street.
Giving children a good meal before trick-or-treating will help them stay out of their treat bag, making it easier to wait until they get home to sort and inspect their treats. A responsible adult should closely examine all treats and throw away any spoiled, unwrapped or suspicious items.
The Chula Vista Police Department wishes the community a fun and safe Halloween!
